Avon voters were in favor of ballot issue 2C, which asked for approval of a tax on the use of construction materials, as of 9 p.m. on Tuesday.

Unofficial results showed 53% of voters for the ballot measure, and 47% against. A total of 1,844 votes had been counted.

The town of Avon does not currently have a tax on the use of construction materials and is the only jurisdiction in Eagle County without a construction materials use tax. The proposed ballot measure would tax the use of construction materials at a rate of 4%, which would match the construction materials use taxes in Vail, Minturn and Eagle.

If passed, the use tax would only apply to projects in Avon undergoing over $125,000 of work, and the funds gathered from the tax would go to the town’s community housing fund. The tax would also take the place of any sales tax otherwise applied to construction materials for projects built in Avon.

This is the third time Avon voters have seen a construction materials use tax on the ballot. Avon voters rejected a similar proposal last year, with 60% of the 1,115 Avon residents — among 2,981 registered voters — who voted in 2023 voting against the use tax ballot question. Avon voters also rejected a construction materials use tax in 2002 by a vote of 573 against the use tax and 379 in favor.
